Fashion students at London's Earl's Court

Following the BA (Hons) Fashion Studies programme’s successful show in Lincoln last month, students then travelled to London to promote their work to the Fashion industry at Graduate Fashion Week, which is held annually at London's Earl's Court.

Amid enquiries and conversations with design studios, retailers and photographic studios, including legendary photographer Nick Knight’s SHOWstudio, who were keen to photograph Lincoln students’ work, there were talks and careers advice sessions on portfolio preparation, CV writing and the use of social media in the Fashion business. A variety of industry experts including the Karen Millen team, Henry Holland, Colin McDowell, Arts Thread and Victoria Beckham with son Romeo in tow, dispensed advice, talked about their experience, and gave students the opportunity to ask questions.

First and second years who attended were really excited to see the opportunities available to them at Graduate Fashion week and the ongoing support provided to graduates. The George “Global Traveller” competition is one such opportunity which resulted in second year student, Cui Yongqi who was a finalist, exhibiting her collection of “Art Beggar”  inspired menswear on the George (sponsor of Graduate Fashion Week) stand, centre stage in the exhibition hall, attracting a great deal of interest and admiration.

e•qui•lib•ri•um | the degree show from Interactive Design

e•qui•lib•ri•um is the invitation to create a temporary piece of art based on a still life scene; a traditional act within a new medium. The installation explores the generation of art through the balance of the human body. The work continually changes as people interact.

Interactive Design seeks to find the balance between the creative idea and the invitation to engage in interaction; this often asks the designer to surrender control, allowing others to manipulate their work and leave a transient impression.

You can see more of their work at the e•qui•lib•ri•um website, and the show opens tonight at 6 pm.

Photography students show their talent at the Fashion Show

Final year students Daniella Farrow and Hannah Wilson, from BA (Hons) Contemporary Lens Media, were both chosen last week to photograph the Fashion show which took place in the Architecture building.  Daniella and Hannah have previously done photo shoots at both Graduate Fashion Week and London Fashion Week, so both were ideally qualified to shoot our Fashion Show.

Hannah's portfolio is increasingly moving towards page layout and design as she makes plans for a career in publishing, focusing on Fashion and Beauty.  Her portfolio can be viewed on her website.

Daniella has a broad and compelling portfolio which showcases the natural talent and passion she has for all her photographic work.  She has a diverse range of fashion clients in her portfolio, which can also be viewed on her website.

Here is a selection of their work taken on Friday.

Smart Moves at Sam Scorer Gallery, Lincoln

SMART MOVES is a group exhibition, which opens today, of new art works by contemporary practitioners from UK and Europe, who work across a range of media.

[ MA Fine Art graduate Roy Pearce]

Curated by Philip Eastwood, senior lecturer within the School of Art and Design, participants are: Felicity Shum, Roy Pearce, Katie Smith, Marta Boan, and Philip Eastwood.

 [Phil Eastwood]

Spanish artist and designer Marta Boan is currently Artist in Residence also in the School of Art and Design, specifically within BA (Hons) Jewellery and Object, thanks to the AA2A scheme and is working on her Useful project: jewels with an added function or functional portable objects to put on as jewellery. She is searching for a clear and basic aesthetic as well as maximum simplicity to formalize her pieces. Marta is working on making something useful for daily life that is both a beautiful decorative jewel to wear as well as a tool that can be used.

[Marta Boan]

The enormous benefit that having a resident professional in our Jewellery workshops has been evident since Marta first joined us. Students are able to witness first hand how live projects develop to a deadline, how to manage external suppliers and, importantly, they seamlessly absorb specialist knowledge from her just by sharing our many workshops.

Marta has wasted no time in accessing most of the Art and Design departments to complete her Useful project, mainly Fine Art and Fashion but she has also been known to knock on the door of the School of Science for help. It has been immeasurably rewarding to have Marta working amongst the Jewellery & Object team.
“Somehow I try to work with what has always been there, to take it and make it in a different way. My way.” (Marta Boan)

You can see Marta's work, as well as those by the above mentioned artists at the Sam Scorer Gallery, Drury Lane, Lincoln, LN1 3BN from 29 May to 8 June, open daily 10 am - 4 pm.

Success for 2013 Fashion Show

In a break with the format of previous years, graduating students from BA (Hons) Fashion Studies, showcased their stunning collections in a more intimate atmosphere on Friday evening.

Guests lined the catwalk in the foyer of the Architecture building, which allowed a better look at the collections, and gave a show altogether more focused on the designs rather than on the razzmatazz and bright lights of the big catwalk show of previous years.

Animation students selected at BFX Competition

BFX is a brand new festival designed to celebrate the UK’s visual effects and animation industry, inspire the next wave of talent and share the latest knowledge. This creative extravaganza will consist of a 6-week summer competition for the UK’s best VFX and animation students; followed by screenings, master classes, an awards ceremony and other exciting events taking place across Bournemouth 25-29 September 2013.

Congratulations go to students from BA (Hons) Animation, whose team U.U.L.A (Ultimate University of Lincoln Animation) has been selected as one of the finalists who will get to compete at the BFX Competition.  Shortlisting is done by leading animation and VFX studios in the UK.

The course initially submitted animations from two teams, but it was team U.U.L.A that was selected.  It is a great opportunity for our students as they will get to participate in a summer residential in Bournemouth, with each team supervised by leading animators and designers from industry.  Upon successful completion of the 6 week residence, they could then be offered a work placement if they are particularly good (and lucky!).

Illustration students get to design front cover for latest children's publication

Sarah Hughes, currently studying in her final year of the BA(Hons) Illustration course, had her design chosen after publisher HawkwoodBooks invited students to submit their illustrations in an exclusive competition for a new children’s book.

Sarah attended a celebration event where her illustration was unveiled as the winning design for the book, entitled The Strange Encounter of Sally Shakespeare and Toby Tinker. The competition attracted entries from a number of students, who all attended the event at The Terrace, Lincoln, along with publisher Ellis Delmonte, staff from the University of Lincoln’s College of Arts, recent graduates and guests.

Sarah said: “I am delighted to have been selected as the winner of the competition, as it is a great opportunity to work on the illustration for such a wonderful children’s book. All of the entries looked fantastic, and I can’t wait to see my design on the front cover!

As part of her prize, Sarah’s illustration will adorn the front page of the book when it goes on sale from October 2013. Sarah also won a prize of £100.

The Strange Encounter of Sally Shakespeare and Toby Tinker tells the story of a smart and popular young girl, and a shy and friendless little boy, who are brought together unexpectedly.

Ellis Delmonte of Hawkwood Books said: “Every entry was of the highest standard and worthy of being selected. Each would have made a fine cover and I was moved by the skill, energy and imagination of the students’ work. In the end, the judges chose a simple, elegant, clever design, which is contemporary and appropriate for the 9-12 age range. Congratulations to Sarah and to all those who entered the competition.”

Ellis was speaking at the event alongside successful University of Lincoln graduates, Michelle Forest-Beckett and Karen Webb-Meek. Having graduated from the BA (Hons) Fine Art course in 2007, Michelle has worked in set design and contemporary art, and now runs the successful Rock Paper Scissors shop in Lincoln. Michelle spoke about professional artistic careers post-university, and Karen discussed her experiences of post-graduate artwork and publishing possibilities.

Professor Anne Chick, pictured below with Ellis, Professor of Design at the University of Lincoln, also attended the event to present Sarah with her prize.

She said: “Sarah’s illustration is a wonderful example of the talent we have here at the University of Lincoln. Her winning design is thoughtful and eye-catching, and is one of a number of distinctive illustrations entered into the competition.

“We are extremely grateful to Ellis, as this competition provides a fantastic opportunity for our students to work to a live brief in a real-world environment, while showcasing their creativity. We are passionate about working with local businesses, and hope that our relationship with Hawkwood Books continues into the future
.”

The Strange Encounter of Sally Shakespeare and Toby Tinker will be available from October 2013. Meanwhile here all the entries submitted, with the names of the students behind the illustrations.
